100 days down...

Today is the 100th day of school for Caleb and Cameron. It's not that big of a deal for my boys. They just know that it means they are even closer to the end of the year. We are a homeschool family that takes the summer off!! I've heard other families day, "Well, they won't always get an entire summer off..." and I say, "Yeah, and they won't always be children either.."

My children will one day grow up and move on with their life. And my prayer is that they remember what we have taught them and what they have accomplished being "homeschool dudes"! :) My boys have made so proud. I am proud to be their teacher. I am proud to be their mom. They always seem to make me smile, but this past weekend...I was BEAMING!!

We found out about the spelling bee for homeschool families several months after most. We had less than a month to get ready. It was rough. The first day that the boys saw the words, they both knew it wasn't going to be easy. They worked very hard. (And still got the other subjects done, as well!)

Cameron placed 4th in the 5/6th grade division. He got through 5 rounds and missed the 6th word...his only request was that he not miss the first word. He did great. Caleb placed 2nd in the 7/8th grade division and moved on to the "Spell-Off" with the rest of the finalist. He received a medal and wore all day. They both did excellent. Just the fact that they went was enough for me!

And the best part of the day...they both can't wait for next year!

I've been asked many times, "Do you need a degree to homeschool?" or "Do you feel like you're qualified to teach your children?" Those types questions really make me think. Sometimes, it does cause me to question our decision...sometimes.

Homeschool is like parenting. Every family is different. Every child is different. I don't think there is one way to parent and there is not one way to educate your child. In Genesis 1:27 it says "God created man in his own image, in the image of God, He created him; male and female He created them." And we all know that Jesus was a great teacher, so I'll just let you make your own conclusion... ;)

So in this family, that means that I'll teach my children everything from tying their shoes, to conjugating verbs, to baking the perfect chocolate chip cookie.

...And I'll love every minute!

~Lord, sometimes I get tired of defending our decision to homeschool. Help me to seek Your wisdom. Help me to respond in love to those who do not understand the blessings found in homeschooling. Help me to convey that just because we homeschool, does not mean that we are right and they are wrong. (And more importantly...that they are right and we are wrong.) In Your Name, I pray...Amen.
